SalonQP Photo Diary – The Final Episode

Well here it is Part 6 of our SalonQP Photo Diary and this is the final piece of the jigsaw, with a few more snaps of the Schofield Signalman, A few Giuliano Mazzuoli, a little Ehber & Co and a tad of Girard Perregaux with a couple of shots of some of the other stands at SalonQP.

Were to begin, well we think an introduction to Giuliano Mazzuoli is a great place, this little known Italian designer has ventured into watches and bases his concepts on real objects like with the Manometro Watch and based on a pressure gauge, very nice simple, clean timepieces

The Mazzuoli Manometro comes in various guises, being Polished Steel, Brushed Steel, Carbon Fibre, Titanium (Black) and a Rose Gold/Titanium version too, with two dial colours (cream and Black) and the choice of the crown at 2 o’clock or 10 o’clock. There are also chrono versions and a smaller version for the better half of the world called the Manometrino at 27mm diameter.

The Manametro on the Wrist

The next offering from Giuliano Mazzuoli is the Trasmissione Meccanica, and as it suggests is based on gears and transmission gears

moving on from our Italian watchmaker to a few more well known names in the industry like Girard-Perregaux, who where at the show and represented by their UK distributor and agent Giles of Perrelux.

Classic Girard-Perregaux 1966 minute repeater

Moving on to Ehber & Co and we were taken in by the Chrono 4, here are some snaps of the Ehber & Co Chrono 4

a side shot

and now for a full frontal

We think its about time to show you a couple of the stands of the other brands left in the camera and here is MeisterSinger’s Stand at SalonQP, the Glashutte Based watchmaker has some wonderful timepieces and 90% of its collection is Single handed pieces, also don’t forget they won in one of the categories of European Watch of the year 2012 in the inaugural event just a couple of months ago.

and also Corum at SalonQP, unfortunately we just did not have enough time to get up close and personal with many brands at SalonQP Corum being one of them.

And for our parting shots of the SalonQP 2012 event we have decided to showcase the Schofield Signalman GMT PR and DLC

The two Schofield Signalman watches side by side… Which is your favourite?

Schofield Signalman DLC on the Wrist

Now for some pics of the Stainless Steel Signalman GMT

Well that concludes our Photo Diary of SalonQP 2012. Hope you have enjoyed it? and it has given you a feel as to what to expect next year…. We can’t wait.

One for the Ladies – Girard-Perregaux Cat’s Eye /ladies-girard-perregaux-cats-eye-watch/ Mon, 02 Jul 2012 17:22:36 +0000 /?p=3891 Post image for One for the Ladies – Girard-Perregaux Cat’s Eye

Girard-Perregaux Cat’s Eye Jewellery Watch

Press release – Girard-Perregaux

Before we get onto the Press Release just a few of our own words, we cannot fault Girard-Perregaux on its achievements and its commitment to its watchmakers especially with its work to make watchmaking an art that is available and accessible to all through its promotion with its New Young watchmakers activities, which we have closely followed here on The Watch Review Site (if you are interested you will find the articles about these young watchmakers and their exploits here.)

But to say the least we are not impressed by this Girard-Perregaux Cat’s Eye Ladies Watch, its just too glitzy and diamondy for us here at the Watch Review Site… But in the nature of the beast we are sure it will be of interest to a lot of you out there so here it is in it’s full technicolour glory. Oh and not taking away the fact that it has been a mainstay in the GP collection since 2004 and the technical and artistic achievements in producing the piece, its just not for us.

A union between Haute Horlogerie and Haute Joaillerie

A myriad of diamonds clothes the Cat’s Eye in light, accentuating the curves of its silhouette. Behind the scenes are the mechanics of perfection. Time beats to the rhythm of a self-winding movement manufactured by Girard-Perregaux. The Cat’s Eye Haute Joaillerie showcases highly skilled crafts where beauty and technology complement one another in perfect harmony.

Draped in 150 emerald-cut precious stones, the case illuminates its feminine curves. The flower-shaped crown unfurls its petals to reveal its heart: a rose-cut diamond. The hours display blossoms on a bed of gemstones that emphasize the emblematic case shape.

Starting with the small seconds, the iridescent oval progressively broadens with uniform brilliance. The dial, adorned with a delicate “Clous de Paris” hobnail motif, includes 102 emerald-cut diamonds, selected and positioned in order to deliver maximum brilliance.

A traditional technique requiring a particularly delicate touch, the “Clou de Paris” hobnail motif consists of holding several stones with a single “clou” or pin, meaning that the diamond cutter must cut and calibrate the stones meticulously, one by one. The sapphire crystal, rounded in both directions, tops the dial and its leaf shaped hands.

A taupe-coloured satin strap enhances the sparkle of the stones. The contrast is subtle, the union a success. Extended by an ardillon buckle set with 13 baguette-cut diamonds, it encircles the wrist with unforgettable moments in time.

Finally, the hand-engraved case back opens onto the calibre GP03300 self-winding movement whose oscillating weight adopts Girard-Perregaux’s tapestry decoration. The date has been set.

Created in 2004, the Cat’s Eye collection dedicates beautiful watchmaking pieces to women. The refinement of the pieces rivals their attention to detail. Its emblematic design, which has won numerous distinctions, is highlighted by precious materials and manufacture movements, both simple and with complications. The collection proves that fine watchmaking is far from being the prerogative solely of men.

New Faces of Tradition – Follow Up

Following on from our previous articles on Girard-Perregaux’s young watchmakers, we have a press releases highlighting their adventures. Well Girard Perregaux has sent them on a worldwide tour, they’ve been to New York and now they hit Beijing. This time they had the added pleasure of Dominique Loiseau joining them.

Hope you like it…

Girard-Perregaux’s The New Face of Tradition Takes Over Beijing with Famed Watchmaker Dominique Loiseau

Girard-Perregaux Press Release

Beijing, China (June 20, 2012) — Girard-Perregaux, iconic luxury Swiss watch brand, broke the laws of watchmaking with its recent unveiling of an industry first, The New Face of Tradition, Eight Young Watchmakers and the Art of Making Time. This journal, featuring eight young watchmakers from its famed atelier, launched the international Young Watchmakers Tour.

After the successful exhibition at the first stop in New York City, the Young Watchmakers Tour took hold of Beijing on June 20th. Pictures of the talented crew of young watchmakers were shot at their watchmaking benches at many iconic and historical relics in the city, mixing the traditional Swiss craft and the deep cultural richness of Beijing. Following the shoot, the Zen Living Space was transformed into a GP World to showcase the exquisite timepieces and profound cultural foundation of Girard-Perregaux. Guests enjoyed participating in one-on-one workshop, learning about the sophisticated structure of watch movements, and the built movements on their own under the guidance of the brand’s talented watchmakers.

Girard-Perregaux believes that the new generation of young watchmakers can passionately perform multiple roles, which are just as colorful and diverse as the precious Girard-Perregaux watches they build. They perfectly interpret the classical combination of watchmaking and their innovative spirit, full of vitality.

Stefano Macaluso, General manager of Girard-Perregaux said: “Girard-Perregaux, with its 221-year history, has cemented the road for watchmaking in several ways. The young watchmakers not only inherit the tradition of the brand, but also bring more power and vigor with them, fully combining tradition and innovation”.

Dominique Loiseau, Girard-Perregaux’s famed watchmaker, also joined and hosted an in-depth discussion with Mr. Alexandre Bigler, watch expert from Christie’s Hong Kong. Their discussion included timing art, machine manufacturing and the inheritance of classics, as well as Girard-Perregaux’s 221-year tradition and Loiseau’s vision for the future development of the Brand.

‘I’m honored and excited to be in Beijing today”, says Loiseau. “Girard-Perregaux has been making history for the last two centuries. Tradition is foremost a know-how, the fundamental respect for immutable rules of the mechanic, without compromise. But without creativity, tradition is a bad habit. We have to evolve with our time. The essential is to try to create watches that can touch our contemporaries and the future generations”.

A legend in the watchmaking world, Mr. Dominique Loiseau has been engaged in the watch-making industry for more than 30 years giving birth to some of the most amazing contemporary creations.

GIRARD-PERREGAUX VINTAGE 1945 TOURBILLON WITH THREE GOLD BRIDGES

Before we get to the press release, I just wanted to express my humble view on this exquisite Girard-Perregaux Vintage 1945 Tourbillon, This is a Ladies Watch with Three Gold Bridges and was the favourite of a couple of the Girard Perregaux Young watchmakers in our recent GP New Face of Tradition series where we saw Girard-Perregaux introduce eight of their latest young watchmakers giving us an insight into their background and lives. You can see our articles in respect of the same here, New Faces overview, No.1, No.2, No.3&4, No.5&6 and No.7&8.

Its an interesting addition to the already extensive Vintage 1945 range of timepieces and a very welcome one by Girard-Perregaux enthusiasts, So lets see what the fuss is all about shall we…

Girard-Perregaux Vintage 1945 3GB

Press Release by Girard-Perregaux

Haute horlogerie, elegance and technology

The heritage of Girard-Perregaux’s acclaimed Tourbillon with three gold Bridges places itself squarely in the twenty-first century. Combining noble materials and a high-tech finish, its elegance and majestic architecture underscore its singular character. A rarity limited to 50 pieces.

Fashioned in pink gold, the case and the bridges form a striking contrast with the color of the main plate. Its matte anthracite coating is the result of a particular combination of precious materials similar to platinum and draws on cutting-edge technologies. Other elements, such as the barrel, the lower gearwheel bridges and the bridge supports, adopt this finish, resulting in a stunning visual effect.

In a bold leap across time, this limited edition of the Vintage 1945 Tourbillon with three gold Bridges offers a new take on a movement whose origins date back to the end of the 19th century. Drawing on the latest technological progress, it concentrates rare technical and Manufacture expertise within its delicately curved Art Deco-inspired case.

The satin-finished skeletonized bridges, with their pure, contemporary geometry, are the fruit of extremely delicate design: first finely openworked, they are then carefully hand-polished. Seven days are necessary to obtain a perfect finish, since the numerous closed angles form a considerable challenge. The tourbillon system also requires special attention, as its 72 components must be meticulously assembled inside a diameter of just 12 millimeters. To cap these feats, a precious matte anthracite coating gives this timepiece its distinctive personality.

GP Three Gold Barrels Vintage 1945 watch

The self-winding caliber GP9600 movement has an integrated micro-rotor housed under the barrel, patented by Girard-Perregaux. The mechanism’s architecture, also visible through the sapphire back is further enhanced by the matte anthracite-coated components. The Vintage 1945 Tourbillon with three gold Bridges is a formidable demonstration of the Manufacture’s expertise. In other words, how aesthetics and technique manage to reinvent and renew the rules of the watchmaking art.

Girard-Perregaux – Young watchmaker No.7 – Frederic Kuzniak and No.8 – Lauriane Cassard

The last in the series of young watchmakers from Girard-Perregaux’s The New Face of Tradition on The Watch Review Site, so far we have highlighted six of these young watchmakers, many having differing tastes, lifestyles and pasts. Today we finish off with the final two and as we have previously stated these are in no order No.1 could of just as easily been No.8, we have no preference and we mean nothing ny the numbering, its just a way of differentiating between these young and dynamic watchmakers.

No.7 is Frederic Kuzniak, and what treats have Girard-Perregaux in stall for us here, another speedster or musician, No none of the above this is just what you would expect frpom a precision engineer such as a budding watchmaker, Frederic is into mechanical engineering… (in the words of Yoda) a normal one is he me thinks…..

Girard-Perregaux watchmakers

as for interests and the Girard-Perregaux tiomepiece he prefers….

Girard-Perregaux watchmakers ld1

And last but not least in our series is No.8 Lauriane Cassard and she is a green fingered variety of watchmakers.

GP Watchmaker Lauriane Cassard

Gardening is one of the earliest memories I have in my life. Growing up in a family of farmers, I started sowing and harvesting at a very young age and have always been deeply fascinated by how nature responds to the care of human beings. I would always enjoy observing and admiring the changing landscapes through the different seasons, something that I still find very soothing. says Lauriane

One day I heard about an old house for sale and that it would need restoration. I drove to the site to see it closely and instantly fell in love with the house, its energy and mysterious history. My partner and I eventually managed to buy it, restore it and move into this beautiful 400-year-old structure. It has taken three years to bring the house and its garden back to life.

One day an old man from the village told us our house was the only survivor after a fire caused by the Swedish invasion in 1637 that completely destroyed the village. Today, together with my kids I take care of its garden where we cultivate fruits and vegetables that I share with my friends and colleagues. It feels like receiving a living gift from the past. I love it.

Favourite Movie: Pulp Fiction

Favourite Quote: “Dreams are the royal access to the unconscious.”

Favourite Musician/Song: The Kills/Satellite.

On My To-Do List: Bring my kids to a music festival like Paléo in Nyon.

I Am: happy, funny, optimistic and a party girl.

If I Weren’t a Watchmaker I Would Be… an oenologist. for the unknowledgable of us thats a winemaker, or wine making specialist, the science behind winemaking. (see we are diverse here on The Watch Review Site, you could never say we don’t try and educate.)

In 30 Years I’ll Be… retired and well occupied with traveling, cinema, theater.

Favourite GP Watch: Vintage 1945 Tourbillon with Three Gold Bridges

Girard-Perregaux – Young watchmaker No.5 – Laetitia Pino & No.6 – Fabienne Conti

Day 3 or is it day 4 of our series of Young Watchmakers from Girard-Perregaux’s The New Face of Tradition on The Watch Review Site and after seeing the differing tastes and backgrounds of the last Four, we come back today with two more of these Young Watchmakers from Girard-Perregaux.

So, No. 5 is Laetitia Pino, we now have a puzzle to unravel, probably a more apt past time for a watchmaker than the previous four we have seen in this series.

as for Laetitia’s other interests and favourites

Girard Perregaux watchmaker - Pito

Moving swiftly on to No.6 in the series of these young watchmakers, and we are begining to think are they there because of the quality of their work or because of what they enjoy in life, so diverse is the selection here…. just kidding the quality we see from girard-Perregaux is exceptional and we expect nothing less from these up and coming watchmakers.

So No.6 is Fabienne Conti another speed freak within the ranks of young watchmakers at Girard-Perregaux with a taste for music too.

Girard-Perregaux Fabienne Conti

Fabienne states “I started skiing with my brother. It was our vacation activity and I loved it from the beginning. I still remember the first real ride, on my own without instructor or guide. The sense of total isolation, the sound of the skis on the snow and the cold air became immediately addictive.”

I soon started compiling soundtracks for my skiing adventures and found the perfect match when I came across the music of the Chemical Brothers. Together with other bands like The Beastie Boys and Massive Attack, it became not only the soundtrack to my skiing trips but also for life. I listen to it constantly, while working on a watch or at home (quite loud) after a long day of work. When I became a mother a whole new world opened to me. A few things had to change but the passion for skiing and music stayed. I love to take trips with my daughter and my husband to snowy landscapes, enjoy the white mountains around us and, of course, play The Chemical Brothers in our car. Though she’s only 3, she loves it!

Amongst Fabienne’s favourites, she lists

Movie: The Lord of the Rings

Quote: “Let your dreams devour your life, so that your life won’t devour your dreams.”

Band: if we couldn’t guess – The Chemical Brothers

On My To-Do List: Take care of my daughter and plan activities with her.

I Am: organized, conscientious, smart, greedy and kind.

If I Weren’t a Watchmaker I Would Be… an accountant.

In 30 Years I’ll Be… retired and travelling.

Favorite GP Watch: Tourbillon with Three Gold Bridges

Girard-Perregaux – Young watchmaker No.3 – JeanLuc Borel & No.4 – Gilles Catella

Continuing in the series regarding the launch of Girard-Perregaux’s The New Face of Tradition on The Watch review Site and after high-lighting Ines Patoz and Mathieu Bergeon yesterday, we come back today with two more of these Young Watchmakers from Girard-Perregaux.

So, No. 3 is JeanLuc Borel, another musically inspired watchmaker much like Mathieu before him, but its no guitars that JeanLuc is interested in its the Alphorn, yes Alphorn as pictured below….

As for JeanLuc’s interests

Here at The Watch Review Site we have previously looked at the Girard-Perregaux 1966 Full Calendar ok its not the minute repeater but stil a GP 1966 for you to admire.

Moving on to No.4 and Gilles Catella, Hey we have a motorbike nut here, from the four legged pursuits of Ines to the two wheeled Horsepower for Gilles.

Gilles like to tell people that to race motorbikes, you need to be alert, stay calm and have fun. These are the first three rules of motorbike racing that I learnt from my father. He was the one that first exposed me to these wonderful machines since he was a passionate racer himself.

Gilles says “The very first time I rode one, I immediately felt a sense of freedom I could not obtain from any other activity or place. In the beginning I set out on short trips with friends, going from town to town and visiting local sites. As time went by, our trips became longer in distance and more intense in adventure. One highlight was our trip to Morocco. My friends and I managed to cross the beautiful country which I cannot describe with words. We went from the cold and snowy landscape of the Atlas Mountains  to the sandy dunes of the Erg Chebbi. It was the first time I felt a part of my natural surroundings.”

I ride my motorbike every weekend and dream to travel through New Zealand and Argentina. This will demand a lot of time and great preparation. I think it may be a trip for my older days.

Amongst Gilles favourites are:

Movie: The Shawshank Redemption

Quote: ”Work like you don’t need the money, love like you’ve never been hurt and dance like no one is watching.”

Musician: Jack White

On My To-Do List: Enjoy life every day and keep my mind busy

I Am: open-minded and enthusiastic.

If I Weren’t a Watchmaker I Would Be… working on something handcrafted anyway.

In 30 Years I’ll Be… someone who doesn’t have any regrets.

Girard-Perregaux – Young watchmaker No.2 – Mathieu Bergeon

Further to our article regarding the launch of Girard-Perregaux’s The New Face of Tradition on The Watch review Site and highlighting Ines Patoz the first of Girard Perregaux Young watchmakers. We swiftly move on to introduce you to No. 2 in Girard-Perregaux’s selection of these young watchmakers.

So here goes No.2 (as we stated before this is not in any particular order so no one get upset please)

Mathieu Bergeon

Mathieu States “If my wife told me that she was jealous of my guitar, I wouldn’t blame her. The reason being that my guitar is constantly by my side and even comes to work with me every day. Packed up in my case and armed with headphones, I manage to sneak in a quick daily practice during lunch time.”

Music is without a doubt a passion that has been with me since I was a kid. It’s a great thing to look forward to every day. To go home, close myself up in my garage, plug my guitar into my Marshall amplifier and dream. I have never been part of a band but a have a project that I hope to realize in a few years: a rock band with my children. Who knows? The path to stardom has no schedule.
