Signalman GMT PR

Introducing the Schofield Signalman GMT PR, limited edition timepiece from Schofield Watch Company.

This is the first timepiece to come out of the Schofield Watch Company, The piece is to be limited edition to 300 pieces worldwide and is available on pre order. The only differentiating factor between the two offerings other than the number available is the watch case finish, this being polished steel and the Signalman DLC GMT PR is offered as a matte DLC coated black steel case. The Case is 44mm wide and produced locally in the United Kingdom.

While not a divers watch as such it is water resistant to 500 meters and has a AR coated sapphire crystal.

Signalman refers to a lighthouse as is evident with the engraved watch back. The case shape is based on a specific light used in a lighthouse in England.

Not wanting to offer a simple three-hand dial watch to start, the Signalman GMT watch has a GMT hand as well as a power reserve indicator and date complications. Powering the Signalman GMT is a Swiss Soprod caliber 9335 automatic movement. It has a power reserve of 42 hours and the GMT hand is adjusted in one hour increments with a specific inset case pusher tool.

The Signalman also comes with a number of interesting and exquisite straps. They are all 24mm wide and come in a host of styles including shark and calf skin.

Christopher Ward C8 Pilot MkII U-2 Vintage Edition – ‘Hands On’ Watch Review

Written by D Constant for The Watch Review Site.

Here at The Watch Review Site we would like to start by thanking the good people at Christopher Ward for supplying us with a review piece of their new C8 Pilot MkII, the U-2 Vintage Edition. Which is available on pre order and should be available to buy from the start of June 2012.

Now we have the thank you’s out of the way let’s get on with the real reason we are here, to see and review the Christopher Ward C8 Pilot MkII U-2 Vintage edition and put it through its paces on a Watch Review Site ‘Hands On’ Watch Review.

Our initial views are, that name it’s a bit long winded but it takes nothing away from the watch itself, The New Chr.Ward C8 Pilot MkII U-2 Vintage has moved on from the original C8 Pilot and also the C8 Pilot MkII, Gone are the Rivets on the Strap, the dial indicators and markers differ for that vintage look and it comes in a lovely 44mm PVD black case. Yes you heard right Black PVD (very nice)

Christopher Ward C8 Pilot Mk2 U2 Vintage

It’s a lovely addition to the Christopher Ward C8 Pilot Collection, which has been around for a while now,  it wears well and looks good in a variety of circumstances. The C8 Pilot MkII U-2 Vintage also performs as well as expected from any Swiss made and Swiss movement timepiece. All in All it’s a great little (well not little really) quality Pilot watch and for the money, well I haven’t seen or played with better.

So have Christopher Ward and their team pulled one out the bag here. Let’s get into the C8 Pilot MkII U-2 Vintage in Depth and see.

First off, when your C8 Pilot is delivered it comes very well presented in a black leather presentation box with light cream interior (which most would probably keep as it is a quality box to store watches that don’t require a winder), Along with this you get a quick start/functions guide, the guarantee and letter congratulating you on your purchase and a Christopher Ward microfibre cloth. All very nicely done. You feel like you have purchased a luxury timepiece from get go.

Once you get over the pleasure of unwrapping your new purchase you notice a fabulous looking, Striking Vintage style Pilot Watch, as Christopher Ward have so kindly pointed out on their website, the C8 Pilot is a traditional Pilot Watch which is based upon the 1940’s classic  IWC B-Uhren watch. If you ask me with its Black PVD case there an argument to say it’s akin to the Bell & Ross BR Vintage 123 Carbon Series in looks. Not a bad thing hey.

The C8 Mk2, is very well balanced in style and colour choice throughout, hopefully this comes across in our attempts to do the Christopher Pilot MkII u-2 Vintage justice in our photographs.

What do you expect from a classic Pilot Watch?

Well, whatever it is the Chr.Ward C8 MkII U-2 Vintage has it, from its 44mm Black PVD case to its CW branding on the distressed orange/brown leather strap, its the complete package.

The vintage retro feel begins with your first glance at the Watch, the hands and markers, to slightly contrast its black dial are the in military beige as the use of “Old Radium Super Luminova” is apparent  which gives more than sufficient Lumin for the discerning Pilot along with the vintage feel such a timepiece deserves.

And it just goes on with the new distressed leather brown/orange strap (less rivets – I feel it’s better without the rivets and allows the watch to be worn for different occasions easily) is a great touch by Christopher Ward.  Now on to the piste-de-resistance in my opinion of the C8 Pilot MkII U-2 Vintage, it’s Black PVD Case making this Pilot a competitor in the looks department for most of the (shall we say) more expensive and well known Pilot Watches out there.

Even its large onion style crown has the CW touch on the head. Whilst we are talking large the case is 44mm and I have very small wrists, when I first took the C8 out of the packaging to place on my wrist (after struggling to reduce the strap size to suit me, the struggling bit is due to me being a little impatient and the strap being new and stubborn, but in a good way) I thought this is going to be way too big for me. But no once on it felt very comfortable, the crown did not infringe or extrude at all and the watch sat nicely on my wrist this may be down to the thickness of the watch but whatever it is it fits well even for the limp wristed like me.

Over and above the obvious first impressions you also notice the time and effort and preciseness that Christopher Ward have put into the C8 Pilot Mk2 U-2 Vintage (I really can’t think of a way of shortening this name without referring to previous CW Pilots, Sorry);

Like the date window on the dial, Christopher Ward use a black date disc, others would have used white, and it is placed so it doesn’t infringe on the 3 o’clock marker, another great touch.

The Buckle, it’s the same as previous C8’s but also coated in Black PVD, with the CW logo on it, the placement of the CW logo on the strap end, further the CW logo on the crown, yes it sounds like there are lots of logos but they are done so meticulously well they are not in your face and are just really good touches to an already great watch.

The weight of the watch, it feels like you have made a substantial purchase, it’s weighted very well and is solid and wholesome.

But the thing I like best is the unique case back with a small round window allowing you to see the Swiss Selitta SW200  movement, but that’s not all the case back also has  it also has a stamped image of what can be described an airplane wing, you tell me.

Its these little touches that make the Christopher Ward, not just a good Pilot Watch but a Great one, Now add all the above to the fact that it is powered by a true Swiss movement in the Selitta Sw200-1 and you have the complete package and all for well under £500.00.

Yes, Gasp, Shock Horror, Amazement, This Christopher Ward C8 Pilot Watch – U-2 Vintage in Black PVD which can compete with the four figure equivalents very easily comes in at less than monkey.

To Sum up it has been a pleasure sporting the Christopher Ward C8 Pilot MkII U-2 Vintage Watch for the last few weeks, this is a clean, simple, well built automatic Vintage Pilot Watch that can hold its own in any company.

The Quality and outstanding build quality, along with the clear effort that would have been put in to achieve such a great timepiece far exceeds its price tag.

Taking everything into consideration its British design, Swiss movement, Swiss made I would go as far to say that if you where to only buy one Traditional vintage Pilot Watch to add to your collection the Christopher Ward C8 Pilot MkII U-2 Vintage is the one for you.

For anyone that is interested we have a little photo gallery of the Christopher Ward C8 Pilot MkII U-2 Vintage after the technical details below.

Christopher Ward C700 Grande Rapide Automatic Chronograph

The Christopher Ward C700 Grand Rapide is, “quite simply, a magnificent example of the automatic chronograph genre”.

It’s movement is supplied by the Eta 7750, through to the Formula One inspired laser precision carbon-fibre dial, this watch represents the apotheosis of Christopher Wards watchmaking skills upto this point in their short lifecycle.

Christopher Ward say “We were driven by a desire for excellence in creating the C700 and we hope you are equally driven by a desire to own one of these wonderful watches.”

Christopher Ward‘s new C700 Grand Rapide is the British watchmaker’s most ambitious timepiece yet, it is a more modern timepiece in terms of imagery than the watchmaker has previously designed.

Christopher Ward say “Nothing about the watch is a compromise; every aspect of the design has been driven by the desire to create the ultimate motorsport watch.  The C700 has been created for people who prefer to make the most of every second and observe their rivals in their rear-view mirror.”

The Christopher Ward C700 is inspired by motorsport, and this is apparent from the carbon-fibre dial (first time use by Christopher Ward) and very interesting silicone rubber strap with a carbon weave effect, tyre impersonation at its best, but that aside you cannot forget that even though this timepiece is British in design and styling its internal workings and movements are all Swiss made.

Christopher Ward pride themselves on ensuring they design and manufacture top quality timepieces using the best swiss movements and engineering.

The C700 Grande Rapide comes in three models, the only differnce between them is the strap or bracelet combination. The models are

C700SKSI – Silicone Rubber Strap

C700SKS – Steel Bracelet

C700SKK – Black Leather

There is a choice of a stainless steel bracelet, a leather strap or a rubber strap, which mirrors the dial with its polished chequered flag design. The Chris Ward C700 has a 30 minute and 12 hour counter as well as a 60 second chronograph, which has a circular guilloche pattern at its heart and is inspired by a rev counter – continuing the motorsport theme.

Like all Christopher Ward watches, the C700 has been designed in Britain and hand assembled by the company’s atelier in Switzerland.  Superluminova on the hands as well as the dial ensure there’s never a need to be in the dark when it comes to managing time.

This is Christopher Ward’s highest priced model, but saying that as with Christopher Wards ethos the watches are still only priced at £799.00 for the strap versions and £860.00 for the Steel bracelet version and are available directly from Christopher Ward via their website Christopher Ward London Limited

Michelsen Arctic Explorer: Official timepiece of the Solo to the South Pole expedition

Press Release by: Michelsen Watchmaker

On January 17th, Miss Vilborg Arna Gissurardóttir, an intrepid young Icelandic explorer, finished her solo expedition to the South Pole. This incredible journey took Ms Gissurardóttir 60 days and she covered a total of 1’140 kilometers (19 km per day) in harsh and challenging weather conditions such as strong headwinds, treacherous skiing conditions, zastrugi and temperatures of approximately -40°C. She was the first Icelander and only the 9th woman in history to walk to the South Pole alone without any outside help. After the completion of her journey, Ms Gissurardóttir complimented the Arctic Explorer: “The watch did very well. I walked the whole time with the watch strapped on the outside of my jacket, next to the compass. The watch was unprotected and exposed in extreme weather conditions and served its purpose with great honors.”

To survive such a journey, you must depend on solid and trustworthy gear. With this in mind, Ms Gissurardóttir appointed Michelsen Watchmakers to provide her with a reliable timepiece to help her keep track of the time. It was our honor to present her with our Michelsen Watchmakers – Arctic Explorer watch.

The watch was designed with frequent travelers and outdoor enthusiasts in mind. It features the traditional three hands and a calendar but with an additional 24-hour hand and a rotatable bezel. These features allow the wearer to read three different time zones, two of which work simultaneously and the third one to figure out time difference.

The 42mm watch case is made from high quality 316L stainless steel. The steel case is tough and waterproof, a feature tailored specifically to the requirements of outdoor enthusiasts. The white dial is highly visible with big numerals and indexes while the unique arrow-shaped hands are robust and black, which creates great contrast against the dial to maximize clarity. The movement is automatic and was chosen specifically for this expedition due to its high reliability (ETA 2893-A2 Top execution). The selected movement is resistant to extreme cold and the lubricating oils can withstand temperatures up to -50°C. This renders the movement’s accuracy more precise compared to standard movements. A nylon strap was chosen for maximum comfort and its incredible strength.

For further information about the expedition and the watch, click here. For technical specs, click here.

The Michelsen Watchmakers – Arctic Explorer watches were launched on December 1st, 2012. Three dial colors are available – white, black and blue. Various strap options are also available. The watch is delivered with a leather strap and a strong nylon strap or a high quality Italian made rubber strap is provided as a standard offering. Several versions of handmade leather straps in either calfskin, shark or highly unique Icelandic spotted wolffish skin are available.

Graham London Silverstone Vintage 30 Timepiece

LIVING A LIFE OF A CERTAIN VINTAGE

Press Release by Graham London

No trophies, no awards, no podium, only Gentlemen driving. With beautiful lines and shapes, the GRAHAM Silverstone Vintage 30 pays tribute to the origin of racing, to our passion for tracks and beautiful mechanics. Powered by an automatic bi-compax chronograph, the new Silverstone collection bears the colours of a certain vintage.

GRAHAM makes one experience the legendary classic racing with new wrist machines which preserve the pure spirit of car technology and watch making refinement.

Racing is something that you live, not just watch. We are not talking about racing as we call it today. We are talking about genuine racing. The spirit that led the late 19th century brilliant engineers in to create petrol-fuelled machines and race with them. A time when the pleasure to drive was stronger than any competition. The only focus was the track, the car and the sense of a job well done.

In the beginning, the rules of racing were completely different from what they are nowadays.

Can you imagine that the main criterion to be able to participate was to have a vehicle with at least three wheels! Cars and mechanics were at the centre, no matter the number of wheels.

Technical improvements were the priority for all. An incredible challenge at that time which was pure mechanics.

Our traditional motorsport line has been designed and created in this frame of mind. The Silverstone Vintage 30 is streamlined and aesthetically refined to achieve genuine aerodynamics and technology. GRAHAM wanted to get back to racing origins and put its watches at the centre of the track. As carefully as the cars were built, the Silverstone Vintage 30 watch has been created according to the codes of vintage racing and with respect for each part. The “Clous de Paris” decorated bezel, the thin shaped hands and the beige, brown and off-white colours have been elaborately added to the watch. They reflect the desire to preserve the race spirit and primary values.

The GRAHAM Silverstone Vintage 30 is in a non-competition race which rewards watch making savoir-faire and spectators.

Get rid of your horse-drawn carriage and experience a true lap with GRAHAM.

Main features also include:

TAG Heuer Formula 1 Womens Watch – Tom’s Thoughts /tag-heuer-formula-1-womens-watch-toms-thoughts/ /tag-heuer-formula-1-womens-watch-toms-thoughts/#comments Mon, 08 Oct 2012 12:02:13 +0000 /?p=5001 Post image for TAG Heuer Formula 1 Womens Watch – Tom’s Thoughts

TAG Heuer Formula 1 Womens White Ceramic Diamonds

Well the Formula 1 Season is well and truely underway, with only a few races left and everything to play for after Alonso, missing out on another top three finish by being so rudely extracted from the race before the first corner in Japan this weekend, we thought we would keep the F1 theme going by highlighting a ladies timepiece by Tag Heuer the Officila Formula One Timekeeper. So lets get Tom’s views on this timepiece.

Written By: Tom Dunn for The Watch Review Site

The pioneering Swiss manufacturer, TAG Heuer, has long enjoyed a unique relationship with motor sports. One need only look at the history behind the Monaco model, indebted as it is to the success of the 1971 Steve McQueen feature Le Mans, to see the indelible mark race car driving has left on TAG, and vice versa. The Swiss matchmaker was the first company to introduce timing devices for ski and motor racing events, including Formula One, so setting up a long collaboration with the particular sport that has since seen TAG Heuer recognised as the official Formula One Timekeeper.

To commemorate this accolade, TAG has produced a number of F1 series models across the years, including the piece currently worn by the McLaren F1 team drivers; Lewis Hamilton and Jenson Button. This sleek black timepiece, inspired by the cutting-edge technology and high-speed performance of the sport, now finds its counterpart in the TAG Heuer Formula 1 Women’s Watch. Following the same basic shape and design principles of the men’s model, this sexy sister adds a dash of fashion to precision timekeeping.

As was seen in previous watches in the Formula 1 Women’s line, this latest entry swaps out the charcoal grey and black of its partnering piece in favour of a luscious white. It doesn’t, however, carry across the baby pink highlights seen in prior entries in the series, instead offering a simple, two-tone contrast of white ceramic and grey steel that bleeds elegance.

The watch’s dial is punctuated by a total of forty nine Wesselton diamond studs (0.18ct), functioning as a central circle decoration and as the marks for each hour. As if this wasn’t enough luxury for one watch, the TAG Formula 1 is given further charm through the setting of another forty eight diamonds (0.35ct) around the steel bezel. The result is a glamorous aesthetic that would suit day or evening wear with aplomb.

tag formula 1 back

As is to be expected however, the Formula 1 Women’s watch is as impressive under the hood as it is in the body work. Sitting between its sapphire crystal glass face and caseback, the watch boasts a TAG Calibre 5 Automatic movement, highlighted with gold engraving viewable on through the back of the piece. The Calibre 5’s 28,800 hourly vibrations are triggered between twenty six ruby points, with the movement boasting a 38 hour power reserve when the watch isn’t in use.

Finished with luminescent minute and hour hands, and a date window at the 6 position, this latest result of the special partnership between TAG Heuer and Formula 1 is a delight, fulfilling both the technical and stylistic specifications of the savvy watch fanatic.

WRYST Airborne Watches – FW Series /wryst-airborne-watches-fw-series/ /wryst-airborne-watches-fw-series/#comments Sun, 09 Sep 2012 12:29:52 +0000 /?p=4548 Post image for WRYST Airborne Watches – FW Series

A Closer look at WRYST Timepieces – Airborne Range

Written By: D Constant

As promised in a previous post  on WRYST Timepieces we are bringing you a little more detail on the inaugural timepiece range from WRYST, being the Airborne FW Series, The Wryst Airborne is the first offering from Jacques Fournier a Swiss Watch Designer now based in the UK.

The WRYST Airborne comes in four variations, which are FW3, FW4, FW5 and FW6, with the first three being cased in Black DLC (scratch-resistant Diamond-Like Carbon) and the FW6 in a sandblasted stainless steel case.

All the Airborne FW series watches are fitted with the Swiss made Ronda Startech 3540D Quartz movement, this is a Quartz Chronograph movement and the first quartz movement with the counters at 6, 9 and 12 o’clock. The counters represent a 10 hour counter at 12 o’clock, 30 hour counter at 9 o’clock and small seconds at 6 o’clock. The Airborne FW’s also come with a date at 3 o’clock.

As these are extreme sports watches and are built to be used in all conditions, the Airborne is also 100 meters water-resistance and will allow for use in scuba diving, surfing, windsurfing, water skiing, jet skiing and much more

All the timepieces come with vivid, bright and colourful Polyurethane straps which differ in colour dependent on the watch you choose and are fitted with an engraved polished stainless steel buckle. Both these are fitted using screws and not your standard

The crowns are hidden by the unique futuristic design of the 45mm case, a somewhat hexagonal design with a slight arch and all the watches are equipped with K1 mineral crystal glass which is shatterproof and treated with an anti reflective coating.

So far we have four models with little variation, the FW6 is the only model available in a stainless steel case and has an unlimited run, with the FW3, FW4 and FW5 come in the Black DLC and are limited to 75 units of each. I hear you ask what other differences are there to justify three different model numbers, well the significant differences in the FW3, FW4 and FW5 comes in the face/dial of the watches.

As we said previously all three of these models come with the unique designed black DLC coated case, the carbon coating is a highly scratch resistant coating and fits in with the endurance sports ethos of the watch. but the variation is in the face the;

Wryst Airborne FW3 comes with a black dial, with grey inserts and green markings and numerals, due to the counters and date you have no 12, 3, 6 or 9 numerals present on the face. It comes with a Green strap, but can also suit the White or Black strap options.

Wryst Airborne FW4 comes with a black dial, with red outlined grey inserts and yellow markings and numerals, as with all the others you have no 12, 3, 6 or 9 numerals present on the face. It comes with a Yellow strap, but can also suit the Red or Black strap options.

Wryst Airborne FW5 comes with a black dial, with orange outlined grey inserts and orange markings and numerals, as with the others you have no 12, 3, 6 or 9 numerals present on the face. It comes with an Orange strap, but can also suit the White or Black strap options.

And the FW6 is a different beast with Stainless steel case, White dial and black markings. I’m quite a reserved person so my favourite is the FW6, I may be in the minority but that’s my preference, I like the crisp clean dial and the stainless steel case offsets the watch very well.

All in All the Wryst Airborne FW watches have been designed for extreme sports with added flair and style, a Swiss rugged movement that should withstand the wear and tear of an active lifestyle and unique bright colourful design, The materials used are diverse and in some cases at the forefront of innovation within the watch industry. The watches are said to be released in October 2012, but are available online at www.wryst-timepieces.com priced at £475.00 for the FW3, FW4 and FW5 and £415.00 for the FW6.

WRYST – International Jewellery London 2012

Written by: D Constant

We see a new watch brand launched at IJL 2012 being held at Earls Court in London between the 2nd and 5th September 2012. WRYST Timepieces is being brought to us by Jacques Fournier, a Swiss watch designer, who has designed or assisted a number of watchmakers, including creating and developing the entire five timezone G5 collection, Ghost series for Jacob & Co. Jacques has now stuck his neck out (to coin a phrase) and launched his own brand in WRYST, and his first offering is the Airborne Range.

The idea behind the WRYST Airborne Range is to provide the extreme sports person a luxury, stylish timepiece that is also durable and hard-wearing. The Airborne Range is a unisex collection of watches and will be distributed by Since 1853, a UK Watch Distributor, founded by the Carmichael Brothers in 2007.

Since 1853 has a growing range and is Official UK distributor for brands such as Torgoen Swiss, Revue Thommen, Grovana of Switzerland and now WRYST Timepieces.

Various quotes accredited to Since 1853 in respect of WRYST

“We’re delighted to have the opportunity to exhibit the new WRYST exclusive timepiece collection at IJL 2012.”

“It is one of the most exciting designs we’ve seen in a long time, WRYST watches combine stunning and unique looks, with Swiss build quality and value for money. We expect the watches to be well received at IJL 2012 and they provide an excellent opportunity for potential retailers.”

The Wryst Airborne Timepieces will come in the following Models FW3, FW4, FW5 and FW6 and are all equipped with the Ronda Startech 3540D quartz chronograph movement. The FW3,FW4 and FW5 will be manufactured in limited editions of 75 units each.

We will be looking at the watches in more detail soon… keep it peeled on The Watch Review Site.

The WRYST Timpieces Airborne Range will be unveiled today by Since 1853 on their stand at IJL.

Could Yohan face a Fine for his Richard Mille Stunt… /could-yohan-face-a-fine-for-his-richard-mille-stunt/ /could-yohan-face-a-fine-for-his-richard-mille-stunt/#comments Sun, 12 Aug 2012 14:55:25 +0000 /?p=4304 Post image for Could Yohan face a Fine for his Richard Mille Stunt…

Yohan Blake Could be Fined for Richard Mille Watch Publicity Stunt at the Olympic Games

In a follow up to our coverage Jamaican sprinter Yohan Blake and Richard Mille could be fined for the publicity stunt they pulled during the finals of the 100m sprint. The Olympic committee has strict rules about advertising during the Olympics. Athletes are banned from promoting any products until 3 days after the close of the Games.

Richard Mille found a loophole in the strict regulations, placing a prototype tourbillon on Blake’s wrist. He was the only one to wear a watch during the 100m finals, where he came in second to countryman Usain Bolt to win the Silver medal. While Blake positioned himself in the starting blocks, the half million-dollar watch was strategically on his right wrist, in prime position for a beautiful Hollywood close-up.

Apparently, the Olympic committee is furious for being duped by team Richard Mille. The fact that OMEGA sponsors the games as the official timer and pays a small fortune for the privilege adds an extra sting to the situation. We’ll keep you updated on how it all turns out.

For other Richard Mille Sports related watches why not look at the RM038 and RM055 Bubba Watson Watch or the Richard Mille RM056 the watch that shouldn’t be worn???

Johan Blake & Olympic100m Silver Medal winner Richard Mille !!!!! /johan-blake-richard-mille/ /johan-blake-richard-mille/#comments Sun, 12 Aug 2012 10:53:57 +0000 /?p=4295 Post image for Johan Blake & Olympic100m Silver Medal winner Richard Mille !!!!!

The Fastest Watch at the London Olympics? That Would be Richard Mille

Pay close attention here. What Richard Mille pulled off at the Olympics with their sponsorship of 100M dash silver medalist Yohan Blake is nothing short of brilliant. Richard Mille might be a small brand but they’ve managed an impressive presence. Teaming up with sports superstars, they created the RM 027 for tennis great Rafael Nadal and the RM 038 for Masters champion Bubba Watson, among others. These were extremely savvy moves. But the Yohan Blake sponsorship takes the cake, nothing short of a marketing coup.

Creating mystery around the watch, Richard Mille encouraged people to guess the “secret” of who would wear their tourbillon watch in the 100M men’s final dash. We knew it was silver medalist Yohan Blake right after the announcement.

The big “secret” of who was going to wear the watch, never was one, because it was never intended to be. There were clues laid out like candy on a children’s Easter egg hunt. Richard Mille released the “secret” watch July 30th, just six days before Blake raced in the final, stating in the press release that it was to welcome a “sprinter” into the family. The watch wears a white, green and yellow color scheme, the colors of the Jamaican flag. Since Usain Bolt – reigning Olympic champion and Blake’s training partner — is already locked up in a Hublot sponsorship, the most likely candidate was Blake. The “secret” did the job, spreading like wildfire on the Internet by getting bloggers and journalists excited to find the answer Richard Mille had already placed right in front of their noses.

Remember, no athletes can officially endorse a brand during the Olympics, and Richard Mille must wait until 3 days after the close of the Olympics to officially announce the Blake sponsorship. But they got around that rule and timed it perfectly. Blake was set to vie for victory in the 100M finals wearing the watch in front of a national and international audience, during prime time this past Sunday evening.

How did Richard Mille do it? Since the direct route was blocked, they had to figure out a way to get around the sticky wicket of the no advertising rule or get busted. Using “Coattail” ambushing, a type of ambush marketing, they took advantage of the legitimate connection between themselves and Blake and Blake’s spotlight position in front of the cameras in London, and it didn’t cost them a wooden nickel. I’m not talking about Blake’s sponsorship of the watch here but the exposure or marketing of the watch via the Olympics.

Mille couldn’t have asked for better prime product placement if they had purchased it. As Blake took his position in the starting blocks, the Richard Mille watch was front and center. Seconds before the starting gun, an NBC announcer described how Blake positions his feet in the blocks. As the camera focused on Blake’s right foot, the eyes of watch enthusiasts around the world were on Blake’s right wrist, inches away. Although the watch isn’t a new caliber and looks to be the RM, Richard Mille is sure to create one for the speedy Jamaican that is tailored to running really fast. Interested to see how they justify that one.

Yohan Blake ran a great race, finishing second to Usain Bolt. Blake may not have been the fastest human at these Olympics, but he did make the Richard Mille the fastest watch that evening.

All I can say is: Bravo, Richard Mille, Bravo!#
